Punk's War ("Now Hear This" Audiobooks) | Book, Essay
- Book description:
Punk's War is a high-tech thriller, a fighter pilot's story as riveting as it is honest. Written in the tone of the quixotic lieutenants who populate its pages, this novel vividly illustrates the pressures on the new generation of war fighters. Along the way the book introduces an engaging cast of characters: a self-centered squadron commander hell-bent on fixing his tainted professional reputation; a reluctant air-wing commander more suited for life within the walls of the Pentagon than on a flight deck at sea; a battle-group commander trained in the art of driving ships, now thrust into the snap-decision matrix of supersonic jets; and a host of junior officers. Seeking only the ideals they were promised, these technology-savvy aviators are products of pop culture, unimpressed by rank for its own sake and unresponsive to petitions in the name of the profession's lofty mottoes. But for all of its irreverance, Punk's War is a loving tribute to those called to service during an unsteady peace and a definitive statement about why flying fighters for a living remains among the most noble of professions.

- First in a series having Rick Punk Reichert as an F-14 Tomcat aeronaut who has a long-standing struggle with his incompetent squadron commanding officer, becomes an unwilling participant in military political relations, and must wing in the dogfight of his life over Iraqi skies. An entertaining and nicely written narrative of bearer life from the eyes of an aviator. Highly recommended for military and/or Navy fans. Not a technophilic clancybook. Focused on the relationships between combatant pilots, higher-ups, and backseaters, with merely adequate detonations to be interesting. An particularly gratifying book demoing the defeat of military pilots, restricted by politicians. It besides touched on the inter-service competition that existed during the war on Southwest Asia. While it focus 's on one pilot in peculiar, it touches on several others including a self-importance minded squadron commanding officer whose screw up gain his a publicity and a soft occupation. Not a bad read So awful I left it in a B & B and prayed the proprietors would n't detect until after I checked out. This is what Top Gun should hold been. Compelling, credible, and capturing. This narrative accurately depicts self captive jet pilots and the frequent defeats of squadron life under bad leading. It helps to be slightly familiar with one or both of these aspects to acquire full enjoyment out of the book, but it is n't wholly necessary. Well paced and realistic narrative of Naval aeronauts in the modern age. I exhaustively enjoyed it. Loved it! Great action, merriment state of affairss, and sympathetic characters. Hood and his shipmates create a great narrative! ! If you have a pilot nearby to explicate the slang, or if you are familiar with the scene, it is a great read... But if non... Be prepared. I was larning approximately it as I read. Ward Carroll was my professor in college. This book is a fun easy read. Hilarious novel of combatant pilots, by one who has been at that place. Carroll is a reviewing new voice. First, the writer 's certificates. Carroll served as a radio detection and ranging intercept officer, RIO, the cat in tha backseat of an F-14, for 15 old ages and now Teachs at the Naval Academy. So when he says that being shot off a slingshot is life pasing through him. . .all the 'accelerated roller coasters ' and 'car clang and orgasm assorted into one ' analaogies did non make the feeling unfairness, he knows what he 's speaking about.
