Book description:

First published in 1993, Transforming a Rape Culture has provided a new understanding of sexual violence and its origins in this culture. This groundbreaking work seeks nothing less than fundamental cultural change: the transformation of basic attitudes about power, gender, race, and sexuality. The editors thoroughly reviewed the book for this new edition, selecting eight new essays that address topics such as rape as war crime, sports and sexual violence, sexual abuse among the clergy, conflict between traditional mores and women's rights in the Asian American and Latin American communities, as well insightful analyses of cyberporn. The diverse contributors are activists, opinion leaders, theologians, policymakers, educators, and authors of both genders. An excellent text for undergraduate classes in Women's Studies, Family Sociology or Criminal Justice, the book is being reissued on the 10th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act.

Transforming a Rape Culture Essay

Good historical position ; it was intriguing to see where we 've come from and what the feminist motion has accomplished ( as a society we 're much more unfastened to speaking about sexual assault, particularly as it happens between married twosomes, ) and besides dejecting to see that some things are still reasonably much the same. ( Rape and strong belief rates have n't budged much. ) I found the essays on the church 's responsibility/opportunity to make out to sexual assault victims peculiarly interesting. There was a batch in here I agreed with, and a batch I did n't -- I 'm happy to see that the current feminist motion is doing a much greater attempt to be intersectional and sex-positive. I struggled a batch with the essays on erotica ; it 's so much more permeant ( and honestly fucked up ) today but I 'm still non certain how I feel. As a general regulation I tend to shy away from simplistic generalisations and I would hold appreciated position from women's rightists who have a vision for sex/porn that includes credence of playing with power kineticss. Used as a text edition for one of my Women and Gender Studies classes. Great essays from good authors. Brands you think about a batch of things we do non pay attending to in America. vvvbv Lots of position and good written Great aggregation of widely-varying essays on altering the colza civilization, from all sorts of people coming from all sorts of positions. Some of these were togss and some were seemingly written by people who have ne'er thought about this at all earlier. But others were great, thoughtful and made good suggestions. Some good articles and some reasonably flagitious articles. All in all, a good read if you 're reading for the history of anti-rape activism since this digest is from the '90s and is a good show window of a batch of the idea from that clip period, but a batch of the subjects are instead outdated and some are merely obviously incorrect. An indispensable read. This is a good book. I think it 's of import for everyone to read to see where our civilization is. It 's a difficult read merely because of the topic. I am really interested in this field and sometimes it was difficult for me to maintain traveling. I merely wanted to sit and shout sometimes. Still good enlightening read. ( It has been a long clip since I 've read this, and likely the statistics are outdated by now, but it was a really challenging book ) . Certain essays are indispendible reading, and otherwise this book needs to be updated to accommodate the past 15 old ages of feminist theory alteration and development. Merely read it! Reading this book was an oculus gap experience, from a male sheltered point of position I have ever felt I was an ally for feminine rights. However, in many ways I am non making plenty. The civilization we are surrounded by makes it easy to go normalized and many are taught to fault victims of colza, even when it happens to person they love. There are plentifulness of idea provoking essays within this tome and I extremely recommend it for anyone with a mother/sister/wife/grandmother/et Al. Essential reading for anyone alive. I am ever presently reading this book, as it is ever wholly relevant. Excellent work. Decent. A small out-of-date ( it 's from the early 1890ss ) but about half of the essays are still really enlightening ( particularly the 1s on the disclosing to clergy and workplace torment ) . The others were were either stuff I already knew, personal narratives or merely non good essays. Thought arousing and perfectly necessary to read! A must-read for anyone who wants to understand colza civilization. An eye-opener to how bad colza is in America ; it truly makes you angry, but in a good manner. Very disconcerting, that our colza civilization is acquiring worse and non better. The revised edition of Transforming a Rape Culture is a well-written aggregation of essays about how to acquire serious about stoping sexual force against adult females in this state and around the universe. Essaies are divided into three parts: Life in a colza civilization, Strategies and activism, Visions and possibilities. Although the volume is specifically about colza, it discusses how it is supported by the underlying patriarchal societal construction, and how that construction affects minority adult females particularly. The essays, particularly those from male voices, offers hope that colza is n't something ingrained in human nature and we can conceive of and construct a universe where it is extremely rare. Collection of essays An intense and powerful read. A series of essays about the colza civilization that include ways of altering it. This book was a terrible letdown. I was proposing to a extremist women's rightist that it would be hard to analyze colza scientifically, because it 's such an emotional topic, and scientists would be afraid to speculate anything that is n't politically right and feminist-approved. She was outraged and told me to close my face and get down reading, and she recommended this. So I did. The issues I took with this book was that it was missing extremist analysis, every bit good as the positions of authors of colour. The articles were really white and really broad, and because of that, I saw it as missing. 3/30/09: Borrowing this from a friend ( who is borrowing it from another friend who is borrowing it from yet another friend ) , so I 'm non certain how much I 'll hold clip to read before I need to give it back. I do cognize that I 'm traveling to utilize two of the articles for a research assignment I 'm making and that the few I 've read so far have all been truly obliging. Although a spot out-of-date, there are several good analytical essays sing meshing subjugations in footings of a colza civilization. Although it is reasonably conservative in footings of gender. Missing in sex positiveness when discoursing things such as erotica, and discoursing female-identified gender. Besides the book is a tad transphobic. Thoroughly necessary! This book renewed my hope that it is possible, within our life-times, to transform the civilization that we have bred that tolerates and promotes sexual force. We all have a pick, so Lashkar-e-Taiba 's utilize it to alter this universe! ! Miedzian piece was good written. I read this book aboard Trauma and Recovery for a category on gender and sexual assault. Hernandez-Avila piece was great. bell maulerss ever a authoritative... it was great! I wish I had read a book like this about 15 old ages ago. the motherfucking crap.
