Book description:

First published in 1954 and long out of print, this novel of pre-Hispanic Indian life in the Southwest combines the authenticity of an anthropological report with the suspense of a mystery novel. The author, best known as an anthropologist during his lifetime, is now recognized as a major Native American novelist. Hitherto virtually unknown, "Runner in the Sun" is sure to take its place next to McNickle's "The Surrounded, " also available from UNM Press, as a classic of Native American fiction.

Runner in the Sun Essay

A simple but effectual narrative of Native America before the European invasion. I felt like I was acquiring a true glance into the life and civilization of Pueblo indigens, with the word picture of the joy and adversity they found in nature, every bit good as the capacity for fraudulence ( and finally salvation ) amongst their ain sort. Published in 1954, it is misguided to go through over this novel as immature grownup. Yes, it has authoritative elements of narrative and traditional fictional constructions, but the narrative itself is a insurgent arm in the McCarthy epoch, knifing those who strive to except based on animuss and fright. This narrative runs deep. 2.5 stars. An prosecuting narrative told in linguistic communication reminiscent of unwritten tradition. Salt is a immature adult male, merely come of age, who becomes embroiled in a unreliable secret plan among his people. Finally he must go forth his small town on a pursuit to salvage his people from drouth and from themselves. The scene in the American sou'-west is brought to life through this narrative, but the narrative itself lacks nuance.
