Book description:

Both of these stories sprang from Joseph Conrad's own experience sailing in the Far East with the merchant navy.

"For it can hardly be denied that it is not their own desserts that men are most proud of, but rather of their prodigious luck, of their marvelous fortune," wrote Conrad of YOUTH. In it he captures a young man's exhilaration in the face of danger and the unknown.

THE END OF THE TETHER is of a different mold. Captain Whalley, aging but still afloat, compromises his principles without understanding what can follow. But life, like the sea, is unsparing, and the captain's fate arrives in due course, served up with Conrad's own brand of uncompromising logic.

Book Authors:

Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad ( born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski ) was a Polish-born English novelist who today is most celebrated for Heart of Darkness, his fictionalized history of Colonial Africa.Conrad left his native Poland in his center teens to avoid muster into the Russian Army. He joined the Gallic Merchant Marine and briefly employed himself as a wartime arms-runner. He so began to work on board British ships, larning English from his shipmates. He was made a Master Mariner, and served more than 16 old ages before an event inspired him to seek his manus at writing. He was hired to take a steamer into Africa, and harmonizing to Conrad, the experience of seeing firsthand the horrors of colonial regulation left him a changed adult male. Joseph Conrad settled in England in 1894, the twelvemonth before he published his first novel. He was profoundly interested in a little figure of authors both in French and English whose work he studied carefully. This was utile when, because a demand to come to footings with his experience, lead him to compose Heart of Darkness, in 1899, which was followed by other fictionalized geographic expeditions of his life.He has been lauded as one of the most powerful, insightful, and upseting novelists in the English canon despite coming to English subsequently in life, which allowed him to unite it with the esthesias of French, Russian, and Polish literature.

Youth & The End of the Tether Essay

This volume contains two narratives written four old ages apart, one about a adult male in his early young person, and the other about an older adult male approaching the terminal of life, both written by a adult male who was neither vernal nor old. Age so plays an of import portion in both narratives. Actually, what I 've merely read besides included Typhoon, another short narrative by Joseph Conrad. Slightly difficult to read, as most plants of that epoch are to those of us populating in 2014. Nevertheless, I enjoyed most The End of the Tether, mentioning to the terminal of a life, in this instance, of a boat captain. I suppose we all must populate this narrative in our ain manner, but it helps to populate it through the eyes of another, at least one time. These two narratives were suitably combined in one small book and attractively captured the This was truly good! My first debut to Conrad.
