- Born to a sharecropping household, Ernest Gaines was picking cotton in the Fieldss by age nine and merely attended school five or six months a twelvemonth. When he was 15, he moved to California to fall in his female parent who had relocated during World War II, and began composing. He attended San Francisco State University, served in the ground forces, and won a composing family to Stanford University. Gaines has been a MacArthur Foundation chap, inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, awarded the National Humanities Medal, and inducted into the Gallic Order of Arts and Letters as a Chevalier. He and his married woman split their clip between Louisiana and San Francisco.
