Patty Jane's House of Curl Essay
- Nice easy amusing edifying read Quick read but I enjoyed it. It was a good read. Not excessively heavy, even though it was sad in parts. This is a re-read for me. I think I liked it better when it foremost came out. I was less read at the clip and it was a dainty reading about South Minneapolis in the 50 's and 60 's as I was at that place... and there lies the job upon reading it now. My universe back so was modern, my parents were immature and even my born-in- Sweden grandmother did non state uff district attorney. I think the lone modern mention was in the hapless male child jumper that Nora was have oning in 7th class, which would hold been around 1963 possibly. Cute I laughed, I cried ( truly cried ) and was brought back to a clip when my Swedish hubby 's ma and pa lived in Minneapolis. The House Of Curl reminded me of the hairstylist who lived downstairs in my mother-in-law 's flat edifice. The close friendly relationships that she, my mother-in-law, had with so many of the people in that old brick flat edifice was common and unexpected in the metropolis and so I could associate to the ladies of Patty Jane 's House Of Curl. At times it seemed a spot dark but that 's true of life as good. Then came the redeeming facets and you see how household pulls you back and becomes more of import as you grow up and turn old. After a slow start with a really dated clip puting incl linguistic communication, imposts etc. I enjoyed this adequate to give it a 3.5. Decidedly a narrative of life 's ups and downs and how to get by with them. Pretty asinine read. Kind of like Fried Green Tomatoes meets Prairie Home Companion in the soap opera version. Wow, what a book! I anticipated that it would be similar to Steel Magnolias but it was non. The narrative of 2 sisters and their lives. Trial after test. Patty Jane marries Thor, he bumps his caput and a unusual lady finds him and keeps him for 14 old ages. Herriot autumn in love with Avil, a millionare who dies in a plane clang and she turns into an alcoholic life on the streets, plus tonss, tonss more. Patty Jane falls in love with Clyde so finds Thor. He is encephalon damaged and Patty 's girl Nora has a difficult clip with her disabled male parent. Entertaining, silly book. Patty Jane and her sister, Harriet, raised themselves because their female parent and male parent were alkies. They took attention of each other and were close sisters and best friends. Patty Jane was the oldest. Patty Jane met and fell in love with Thor at the age of 19. Thor was a handsome, good built Scandanavian male child who was raised by his female parent Ione. They married and Patty Jane got pregnant on their nuptials dark. This did n't do Thor happy because he was n't ready for a household and besides did n't believe Patty Jane was pregnant. They lived the following 7 months in matrimonial cloud nine with Patty Jane excited about the approaching babe and Thor disregarding her gestation. When he could no longer disregard it, he began to disregard Patty Jane. off-beat people, heartwarming Thoroughly enjoyed the characters in this charming narrative. B+ evaluation Fictional characters had no deepness. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, 'n start all over once more, in the House of Curl beauty salon. Just maintain traveling along, acquiring up in the forenoon, holding your java, eating something healthy. As two celebrated wireless personalities said, Everything 's gon na be all right. Or non. Stopped at p. 144. Will return to it some twenty-four hours, but I was more in the temper for unmitigated happy. Patty Jane and Harriet Dobbin grew up with alcoholic parents, unable to acquire a true feeling of happy household life. At 20 twelvemonth old, Patty Jane falls rapidly in love with the breathtakingly fine-looking Thor Rolvaag and the two marry shortly after. When Patty Jane tells her new hubby that she is pregnant, Thor is less than thrilled at the chance of being a dada. Just a few yearss before Patty Jane gives birth to a girl, Nora, Thor disappears without a hint. Many many old ages ago I read all of Lorna Landvik 's books and loved them. Recently I put Patty Jane on my to re-read list and got right to it. And oh it was fantastic! Merely a truly hearty narrative with tonss of heartfelt minutes and calamity and victory. I think it 's amusing ( and sort of dissing ) that the first sentence of the endorsement on the screen flap says An easy-to-read narrative. I 'll be generous and assume they mean it 's easy to read because the narrative draws you and you care for the characters, non that your encephalon can easy manage the narrative construction and vocabulary. I was surprised at how small of the narrative I remembered. I loved the midwestern Scandinavian inside informations and I suspect I 'll travel on a nice comfy jag of rereading some of her other cosy rubrics. It 's a good book that makes me call at the terminal. And the writer knows what rommegrot is. My aunt Lent me the book and merely because of the rubric I was judging it. I merely couldn´t imagine that I would wish it. And it truly was a small spot eldritch. Just a clip and topographic point I can´t identify with. Almost manner excessively close to place by all the events, but instead a bracing narrative. So many things I can associate to from 50 old ages in front of the narrative line. I owed this book for 20 old ages and I know I read it, but do n't retrieve any of it. It is a really interesting narrative, with a enigma and sad times, but besides how a household survived over all the calamity that happen to them. , with besides some wit. A fantastic narrative that takes topographic point in Minneapolis. belly laugh, I merely spent the afternoon reading this and loved it. I had intermitent weeping Sessionss and it felt good. What a rollercoaster of life Lorna Landvik wrote about. Did non recognize at the clip that this is the same writer of Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons. Love her! ! ! ! ! Zunächst hat mir die Geschichte nicht so gefallen, aber am Ende wurde sehr eindrücklich deutlich, worum es geht: wie Liebe und Freundschaft uns durch dice dunklen Täler des Lebens tragen können. I loved this book. Get it in a Shelfari book barter! This is adult females 's fiction at its finest. Great characters, obliging narrative. I picked this book up on a caprice at a used book shop and was surprised at how much I liked it. The rubric seems like it will be pretty downy but it had great characters. Some of them were quirky but existent. The book shows the effects of alcohol addiction on a individual and a household. It besides showed that household, is non ever related, as Ione became a female parent and grandma to others in the book. The epilogue tied up all the narratives nicely with a few small turns. This book starts about platitude with two sisters in love who are abandoned by their loves, plagued by calamity. But the narrative that unfolds touches on a household 's battle that is more existent that most plants of fictions. I truly liked this book, found it difficult to set down. It is written by a local writer. I loved this book! It made me laugh and call. I liked the stoping, although, I do wish one thing was different. I wo n't state what though, NO Spoiler! This is the Minnesota Author I picked for March 's book nine. It was a nice small narrative to listen to. So good! You get to wish the characters like your friends. And the reappraisals are true -- this book will do you laugh and call!
