Charles Dickens

Charles John Huffam Dickens ( 7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870 ) was an English author and societal critic. He created some of the universe 's best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian epoch. His plants enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his life-time, and by the 20th century critics and bookmans had recognised him as a literary mastermind. His novels and short narratives enjoy enduring popularity.Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a mill when his male parent was incarcerated in a debitors ' prison. Despite his deficiency of formal instruction, he edited a hebdomadal diary for 20 old ages, wrote 15 novels, five novelettes, 100s of short narratives and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an tireless missive author, and campaigned smartly for kids 's rights, instruction, and other societal reforms.Dickens was regarded as the literary giant of his age. His 1843 novelette, A Christmas Carol, remains popular and continues to animate versions in every artistic genre. Oliver Twist and Great Expectations are besides often adapted, and, like many of his novels, evoke images of early Victorian London. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Dickens 's originative mastermind has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton—for its pragmatism, comedy, prose manner, alone word pictures, and societal unfavorable judgment. On the other manus, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf complained of a deficiency of psychological deepness, loose authorship, and a vena of cloying sentimentalism. The term Dickensian is used to depict something that is evocative of Dickens and his Hagiographas, such as hapless societal conditions or comically abhorrent characters. On 8 June 1870, Dickens suffered another shot at his place after a full twenty-four hours 's work on Edwin Drood. He ne'er regained consciousness, and the following twenty-four hours, five old ages to the twenty-four hours after the Staplehurst rail clang, he died at Gad 's Hill Place. Contrary to his want to be buried at Rochester Cathedral in an cheap, unpretentious, and purely private mode, he was laid to rest in the Poets ' Corner of Westminster Abbey. A printed epitaph circulated at the clip of the funeral reads: To the Memory of Charles Dickens ( England 's most popular writer ) who died at his abode, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 old ages. He was a sympathizer with the hapless, the agony, and the oppressed ; and by his decease, one of England 's greatest authors is lost to the universe. His last words were: On the land, in response to his sister-in-law Georgina 's petition that he lie down. ( from Wikipedia )

Right now I 'm undertaking Hard Times and I love it. I love Charles Dickens! In my chase of literature on the Gallic Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities is one of my favourites. While everyone knows Dickens can be verbose at times, he is really descriptive of these times and seasons, and of many historic locations ( including the Bastille, which is no longer seeable in Paris ) . I peculiarly enjoyed the narrative 's intertwining of lives of households in both London and Paris. Sidney Cardon is my favourite character, who in the terminal, demonstrates the illustriousness of humanity, for which he is remembered for coevalss.
